Turing Test — Still Valid? Yet to Break?

Alan Turing's "imitation game" asked a simple question: can a machine converse so convincingly that a human can't tell it apart? Decades later, it's worth asking whether that's still the right test.

What the test really measures

The Turing Test measures indistinguishability, not understanding. A system can pass by imitation while grasping nothing — which is exactly the gap modern LLMs force us to confront.

Why it's contested today

• Fluent language generation makes "sounds human" cheap.
• Passing the test says little about reasoning, grounding, or truthfulness.
• We increasingly care about capability and safety, not mimicry.
